ARUBA, KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS

Imagine you are on an island in the heart of the Caribbean, on a beach that is miles long and so white, so serene, you are amazed and delighted.  The sun is shining, there is a cooling trade wind, and warm greetings of the island are extended to you “Bonbini” (welcome).  That friendliness, the beach, the tranquility, the fine weather – this is Aruba!

Situated in the southern Caribbean, Aruba is an island which encompasses 70 square miles.  Aruba’s topography is unusual for a Caribbean island.  The southwest coast features seven miles of palm fringed white beaches, with a blue green sea which is calm and clear, with visibility up to 100 feet.  In contrast, the northeast coast is rugged and wild with high, thundering waves that beat against the shore.  An indication of their power is the Caribbean’s highest and most dramatic natural bridge, carved by the pounding sea out of coral cliffs into a high arch.

In 1986, Aruba became a separate entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  Previously, Aruba had been a member of the Netherlands Antilles, which comprised the group of six Dutch Caribbean islands.  A mix of ancestors has produced a people of striking appearance and warm and friendly personality.

The first inhabitants of Aruba were the peace-loving Arawak Indian tribe of farmers and fishermen.  They left behind painted hieroglyphics on the walls and ceilings of caves, but their meaning has eluded scholars and remains a mystery to be resolved.  Most Arubans have an aptitude for languages and speak several, with Dutch the official language.  “Papiamento” is Aruba’s local language, evolved from Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese.  However, English is spoken everywhere.
